More Climategate Data Manipulation

Wednesday, December 9th, 2009

Today’s example of CRU cherry=picking and flat-out changing data that didn’t show man-made global warming comes from Willis Eschenbach at Watts Up With That?. It turns out that what some climate scientists call “homogenizing” data, the rest of us would call “lying.”

One thing is clear from this. People who say that “Climategate was only about scientists behaving badly, but the data is OK” are wrong. At least one part of the data is bad, too. The Smoking Gun for that statement is at Darwin Zero.

So once again, I’m left with an unsolved mystery. How and why did the GHCN “adjust” Darwin’s historical temperature to show radical warming? Why did they adjust it stepwise? Do Phil Jones and the CRU folks use the “adjusted” or the raw GHCN dataset? My guess is the adjusted one since it shows warming, but of course we still don’t know … because despite all of this, the CRU still hasn’t released the list of data that they actually use, just the station list.

Another odd fact, the GHCN adjusted Station 1 to match Darwin Zero’s strange adjustment, but they left Station 2 (which covers much of the same period, and as per Fig. 5 is in excellent agreement with Station Zero and Station 1) totally untouched. They only homogenized two of the three. Then they averaged them.

That way, you get an average that looks kinda real, I guess, it “hides the decline”.

Oh, and for what it’s worth, care to know the way that GISS deals with this problem? Well, they only use the Darwin data after 1963, a fine way of neatly avoiding the question … and also a fine way to throw away all of the inconveniently colder data prior to 1941. It’s likely a better choice than the GHCN monstrosity, but it’s a hard one to justify.

Now, I want to be clear here. The blatantly bogus GHCN adjustment for this one station does NOT mean that the earth is not warming. It also does NOT mean that the three records (CRU, GISS, and GHCN) are generally wrong either. This may be an isolated incident, we don’t know. But every time the data gets revised and homogenized, the trends keep increasing. Now GISS does their own adjustments. However, as they keep telling us, they get the same answer as GHCN gets … which makes their numbers suspicious as well.

And CRU? Who knows what they use? We’re still waiting on that one, no data yet …

What this does show is that there is at least one temperature station where the trend has been artificially increased to give a false warming where the raw data shows cooling. In addition, the average raw data for Northern Australia is quite different from the adjusted, so there must be a number of … mmm … let me say “interesting” adjustments in Northern Australia other than just Darwin.

And with the Latin saying “Falsus in unum, falsus in omis” (false in one, false in all) as our guide, until all of the station “adjustments” are examined, adjustments of CRU, GHCN, and GISS alike, we can’t trust anyone using homogenized numbers.

New York Times Tells Instapundit to STFU

Wednesday, November 25th, 2009

Some The New York Times employee took time out from their busy schedule of losing money and praising Obama to tell Instapundit Glenn Reynolds to “STFU.”

This is indeed amusing. However, I think it’s high time we stopped trotting out the “look at the mighty newspaper taking on the lowly blogger” cliches, even for the sake of irony. The stark fact of the matter is that Instapundit has more readers than The New York Times. If i wanted to reach readers outside the Greater New York Area (and, more honestly, Manhatten), I’d rather get a link from Instapundit than a profile in the The New York Times.

If Obama is the Democratic Party’s quarterback…

…then right now his passer rating is a couple of points better than JaMarcus Russell.

Iowahawk Geographic: The Secret Life of Climate Researchers

Tuesday, November 24th, 2009

Once again, Iowahawk proves he’s the web’s reigning satire master.

“The Alpha Grantwriter in our hive has been very successful indeed. He has earned three publications, a keynote address, and attracts the attention of a suitor from the symbiotic grant-giving predator genus Lucra Ecologica Hysterica. The suitor’s grant bags are bulging with carbon credits and tax revenues harvested using the hive’s last graphs, and the pair once again engage in their annual cross-pollination ritual. They relax with a cigarette, and return to their respective hives: the Grantwriter with fresh money, the Grantgiver to Washington or Brussels with new carbon tax proposals. The circle of life is completed.”

More Red Light Camera Follies (Chicago Edition)

Tuesday, November 24th, 2009

Chicago installed red light cameras in 2007. As always, accidents promptly increased, just as they have everywhere else they’ve been installed.

It’s tempting to wonder when officials will figure out that red light cameras harm more than they help, but it would be false. Officials know, they just don’t care. It’s not about saving lives, it’s about making money.

RIP: Congressional Medal of Honor Winner Col. Lewis Millett

Thursday, November 19th, 2009

Col. Lewis Millett died on Saturday at 88. He lead the last bayonet charge of the Korean War.

There’s also this: “As an antitank gunner in Tunisia, he earned the Silver Star after he jumped into a burning ammunition-filled halftrack, drove it away from allied soldiers and leapt to safety just before the vehicle exploded. Not long after, he shot down a German Messerschmitt Me-109 fighter that was strafing Allied troops. Col. Millett, who was firing from machine guns mounted on a halftrack, hit the pilot through the windshield.”

They still make ’em like that (as some of our troops in Irag and Afghanistan can attest), but there can never be enough…

Area Man Takes Responsibility for Own Problems

Thursday, November 19th, 2009

In an odd exposé that has left the worlds of politics and academia abuzz, a local homeless person revealed yesterday that he only blamed himself for his failures.

“The poor man needs help. Anybody that takes responsibility for his own actions is certifiably insane.”

Kentucky’s Tax Dollars At Work

Wednesday, November 18th, 2009

From the fine folks over at The Corner comes this wonderful, two-part story of tax dollars at work.

It seems that the Louisville African American Think Tank wanted to put on a two day “urban health summit,” and applied for, and received, a government grant. Except there seems to be a few tiny problems:

  • The “think thank” in question wasn’t tax exempt, having been dissolved by the state in 2005 for failing to file annual reports.
  • The board of the think tank had a, ah, “colorful” history:
    • “Treasurer Theron Dunn has been arrested for theft and burglary.”
    • “Secretary Terell Stoner has two full pages of charges including sexual abuse, armed robbery and assault.”
    • “Yancy Davis, a director, has been arrested for drug violations, carrying a concealed weapon and child abuse.”
    • Think Tank Director Rev. Gerome Sutton was once on the “Louisville’s Most Wanted” list for forging his ex-wife’s signature on her car title and failing to pay more than $30,000 in court-ordered alimony, and was also arrested for allegedly threatening to kill his ex-wife.
  • Best of all: The initial $10,000 check from the state was cashed at a liquor store.

And this was from a state government. Just think: If Rev. Sutton had only applied for some of that sweet stimulus money, he’d still be receiving checks…

You know who else hated Christmas?

Tuesday, November 17th, 2009

Hitler!

(Actually, the whole “War on Christmas” thing isn’t of great concern to me (except as an example of the much larger and deadlier problem of general political correctness), but I couldn’t resist a one-word Godwin, especially since Mike Godwin is on my Facebook friends list, since we argued with each other way back in the dim, misty days of the Austin BBS community…)

Turning America into California (and not in a good way)

Tuesday, November 17th, 2009

This article by Dennis Prager nicely summarizes how left-wing policies has brought California to the verge of bankruptcy…and how Obama’s policies threaten to do that to the rest of the nation.

“The left wants America to abandon its defining commitment to individualism and replace it with a European-style nanny, or welfare, state.”

Indeed.
