71% of Missouri Voters Oppose ObamaCare

August 4th, 2010

Those numbers aren’t from an opinion poll, they’ve from actual voting results on Proposition C.

Missouri is often considered a political bellwether state. It went for McCain in 2008, but only by .1% of the vote.

If ObamaCare is this unpopular nationwide, then Democrats are in for a world of hurt come November.

Living Off the Grid and Green Baiting

August 4th, 2010

Interesting mini-interview with Nick Rosen, a proponent of living “off the grid.”

I especially liked this quote from him:

I rather like Thoreau because he was also a part-timer. He walked back to have his mother do his washing on Fridays. For him, it wasn’t a religion- it was a beautiful philosophical experience. It wasn’t a competition to see who could wear the hairiest hair shirt.

Naturally, right below the religious greens immediately start complaining that his hair shirt isn’t hairy enough…

Update: Link fixed.

Fake Austerity, the Obama Way

August 3rd, 2010

Problem: Voters are outraged that government bureaucrats continue to get hefty pay and benefit hikes while the private sector suffers through the leanest years since the Great Depression.

Solution: A bonus (not pay) freeze, and only for political appointees (that’s, what, all of 2.000 people?).

Next on the list of Obama Austerity Measures: Offbrand caviar for the SEIU lounge.

Dr. Atkins Vindicated

August 2nd, 2010

For years, the federal government, doctors and nutritionists have treated dietary fat as Public Enemy #1, despite scanty science of a link between fat intake and obesity. Meanwhile, the same people were talking up carbohydrates as a perfectly healthy food choice at the same time when, by an amazing coincidence, Uncle Sam was dishing up tens of billions of dollars in corn and grain agribusiness subsidies. In effect, saying no to meat and fat meant saying yes to high fructose corn syrup.

So a significant portion of Americans start cutting back on fat and loading up the carbs. Then, a little while later, that ungrateful little heretic, Dr. Robert Atkins, has the insolence to point out “Hey, obesity is up, not down, and diabetes is going through the roof. Maybe fat isn’t evil, and maybe too many carbohydrates can make you fat.” The condemnation of the Government Medical Complex was swift and merciless, and only increased in vitriol when he came out with a diet that actually helped people lose weight.

Now comes word that it’s all been one big fat lie. (Preceding pun blatantly stolen from Gary Taubes’ ground-breaking New York Times Atkins story from 2002.) Very large and rigorous scientific studies increasing show no link between dietary fat and obesity.

But don’t expect a significant change in federal government diet guidelines anytime soon, since the Atkins diet is still politically incorrect among the “meat is evil” religious environmentalist crowd, which make up a disproportionate share of our ruling elite. Big government means never having to admit you were wrong…

Illegal Alien Amnesty: Now Without All That Annoying Voting

July 30th, 2010

With 68% of Aemricans supporting building a border fence, illegal alien amnesty even less popular than cap-and-trade (even when disguised as “comprehensive immigration reform”), and an overwhelming majority of Americans siding with Arizona’s new border enforcement law and against the Obama administration, you would think that Democrats would be scrambling to get on the same side of the issue as voters, or at least doing their best to ignore, so as not to be slaughtered come November.

You’d be wrong.

Instead, the Obama Administration has decided to an end-run around that whole pesky “consent of the governed” issue to have Immigration Services implement an amnesty without congressional approval.

Combined with the Democrat’s perpetual efforts to give voting rights to felons, it reminds me of that old Stalin-era joke: “The government has lost faith in the citizens, and has reluctantly decided that it must elect a new people.”

DC Snipers Had Accomplices, Lee Boyd Malvo Tells Journalist William Shatner. (Wait, WHAT?)

July 29th, 2010

According to this story,

Convicted DC sniper Lee Boyd Malvo tells actor William Shatner on a cable TV special that he and his partner tried to recruit fellow shooters for their 2002 spree and that his accomplice killed one man for backing out, according to the program set for airing Thursday [on A&E].

That little tidbit raises a number of interesting points:

  • It reminds us that the whole DC Sniper case was severely hampered by political correctness from the git-go, from wasting time looking for the imaginary white guy the FBI profiler said had to be a shooter, to downplaying the Jihad angle of Malvo and executed co-conspirator John Allen Muhammad.
  • That we’re just now getting these revelations suggests that the media is very poor at follow-up, especially considering that the DC Sniper case dominated news cycles for well over a month, and was one of the biggest stories between 9/11 and the liberation of Iraq.
  • And who’s breaking this story? Anderson Cooper? No. Steve Kroft? No. Not even (God help us) Geraldo Rivera. No, this story is evidently being broken by William Shatner on A&E.
  • This would be the perfect point for one of those rants about the blurring of the lines between journalism and entertainment, but you know what? That ship sailed a long time ago. At least as long ago as Network (which, by the way, is still brilliant), and arguably even earlier. But why Shatner, and why A&E? Who knows, maybe Malvo said “I got a secret, but I won’t tell it to anyone but Captain Kirk! And you damn well make that original recipe Captain Kirk! None of this Kirk 2.0 crap!”
  • Actually, Shatner’s about the only one not to be blamed for the situation, as he’s made it apparent that there’s nothing he’s afraid of tackling, and I’m actually something of a Shatner devotee.
  • But having Shatner break the story reminds me of that Jon Stewart tagline:

I guess we’ll have to get used to saying “William Shatner, Investigative Journalist” in the same way we’ve gotten use to saying “Emmy-Award-winning actor William Shatner.”

(Hat tip: Glenn Reynolds, although I think Instapundit buried the lede here, leaving out the all-important Shatner Angle.)

It May Be Easier to Take the Money of the Clueless than the Guns of the Vigilant

July 27th, 2010

Old and Busted: Sarah Brady trying to take your guns.

The New Hotness: Sarah Brady participating in multi-level marketing fraud.

(Actually, she probably still wants to take your guns…)

Pelosi: Taking the Country to Hell in a Designer Handbasket

July 23rd, 2010

Leading the most unpopular congress in history, Nancy Pelosi takes the only logical step: Having a custom handbag designed for her by German royalty.

After all, nothing says “I care about the little people” like a Diane von Furstenberg handbag…

More JournoList Fallout

July 21st, 2010

This piece by John Hayward (AKA Doc Zero) over at Hot Air on the unfolding JournoList scandal is so chock-full of quotable goodness that I’m going to excerpt some here:

Taylor Marsh grins through the flop-sweat to assure us conspiracy to defraud the dwindling audience of the dinosaur media, and slander innocent people as racists, is no big deal when “avowed and openly progressive reporters” do it. I guess we’re supposed to take it as a given that all progressives are liars and smear artists, so we’ve got no right to complain when they’re caught lying and smearing people. Fish gotta swim, birds gotta fly, progressives gotta try throwing a white sheet over Fred Barnes to save Obama from a scandal that should have finished off his campaign.

[snip]

Anyone who has studied the tao of Breitbart knows the first revelations are not the worst. The way to turn the Left’s control of media against itself is to save the really devastating material for later, and release it on a timetable that keeps the story sizzling. The Blatant Beast is defeated by feeding it a story it cannot help repeating. The dark cloud forming over the absurd defenses deployed by liberal reporters today is the shadow of incoming rounds from the second volley.

[snip]

For independents who don’t follow politics closely, the JournoList scandal provides a simple, blatantly obvious narrative about fraud and propaganda. A sizable segment of the “journalist” population stands revealed as sputtering extremists, who talk about killing stories and destroying people’s lives to protect their favored political candidate. Yes, these people are self-professed liberals – they’re not pretending to be “objective” reporters or news anchors – but the cross-pollination between “liberal” and “objective” journalists is a blindingly obvious matter of public knowledge, and the things they’re talking about doing are vile, underhanded, and conspiratorial.

The general public will be able to digest this story, and they won’t like the taste. They’ve already got a low opinion of journalists. It will plummet even further once they get a few bites of JournoList. No magazine, newspaper, or network that continues to employ any of the people quoted in the Daily Caller story can be trusted by any fair-minded person as a reliable news source. Period.

The discussion of false racism charges is an outrage. The American public is growing very tired of being pummeled with the racism club. The cynical plan to pick a random conservative – “who cares?” – and slander them as racists will mix with disgust at the NAACP for trying the same wretched tactic on the Tea Party movement. The once-feared Race Card is looking rather tattered around the edges. The Left has been putting a lot of effort into shuffling those cards into the deck for the 2010 and 2012 campaigns. The nitwits at JournoList just made them much more difficult to play.

Read the whole thing.
