Texas Gov. Dolph Briscoe Dead at 87

June 27th, 2010

Here’s the Houston Chronicle obituary.

Briscoe (who had a mixed record as governor) was the sort of southern conservative who is no longer welcome in the Democratic Party. Indeed, his “no new taxes” pledge would probably get him labeled as a “right wing extremist” by other Democrats today. His defeat by the more liberal John Hill in the Democratic primary set the stage for Bill Clement to become the first Republican governor of Texas since Reconstruction, which in turn was a key event in Texas changing from an overwhelming Democratic majority state to an overwhelming Republican majority, possibly second only to John Towers’ election to LBJ’s seat in the Senate in 1961.

News Flash: It’s a Bad Idea to Hire Liberals to Cover the Conservative Movement

June 25th, 2010

Too bad it took The Washington Post so long to figure that out.

I’m also amazed that anyone, anywhere (even Dave Weigel) would think something they wrote on an email mailing list wouldn’t come back to haunt them. (Especially since emails from Journolist had already made it out into the wild.) Attention people: You have to assume than anything you email, post, or say in a public place is being recorded at all times. That’s simply the world we live in. Deal with it.

Obama Fires McChrystal, Replaces Him With Petraeus

June 23rd, 2010

Technically speaking, he relieved Gen. Stanley McChyrstal of command and replaced him with Gen. David Petraeus. Petraeus (or, as Moveon.org once referred to him as, “General Betray Us”) taking over is probably good news, especially given Michael Yon’s criticisms of McChyrstal. Perhaps Petraeus can beef up our counter-insurgency campaign in Afghanistan, and possibly convince Obama that setting a deadline for withdrawal is a bad idea.

I’m sure howls of outrage about the firing from those on the left who condemned Bush for not “listening to the generals” will happen any minute now. (Checks watch) Yep, any minute now…

Breaking: Federal Judge to Obama: No, you can’t have a Drilling Moratorium

June 22nd, 2010

Not yours.

This is good news, since actual oil drilling experts seem to agree that relief wells need to be brought to bear on the spill to prevent a leak blowout, causing an even-more-massive spill.

NRA’s Sell-Out: It’s Official

June 15th, 2010

The NRA officially announces they’re selling out to the Pelosi congress’ anti-free speech agenda.

This is a bad decision that will cause them to lose members. You don’t knife your friends in the back to make deals with your enemies, and you don’t make deals with the butcher to stand aside while he slaughters the other animals in exchange for being eaten last. And as long as Pelosi is Speaker, “pro-gun Democrats” can only be considered as pro-2nd Amendment as Bart Stupak was pro-life, i.e. right up to the point that it becomes a choice between their “principles” and the dictates of the Democratic leadership, and then their principles can be bought off with a empty promise.

Members should still contact the NRA at all levels to know this is unacceptable. You can also call them at 1-800-672-3888, or use the NRA PVF fund form.

NRA Selling Out on Free Speech to Obama/Pelosi/Reid?

June 14th, 2010

So the reports go that they’ve cut a deal on the anti-free speech DISCLOSE Act. Pelosi and company are besides themselves with joy.

Members might want to contact the NRA at all levels to know this is a very bad idea. You can also call them at 1-800-672-3888.

And here’s the NRA PVF fund form.

Spine! Who’s have thunk it?

June 14th, 2010

Today the University of California at Irvine announced they were apologizing to 11 members of an Islamic student group arrested for interrupting the Israeli Ambassador’s speech for “violating their civil rights.” Or at least that’s the sort of headline you’ve come to expect out of both the People’s Republic of California and the University of Political Correctness.

The funny thing is, it didn’t happen this time.

Instead, UC Irvine suspended the Muslim Student Union for a year. Wow, spine! At a California university! Who’d have thunk it?
