Monday, February 21st, 2011As a much more closed society, news is harder to come by, but depending on who you believe, there are conflicting reports that:

A popular uprising that toppled Ghaddafi would be great news, but I’m not sure I’m willing to believe he would be that easy to topple. Ghaddafi seems like the sort of dictator who would happily slaughter tens of thousands of his citizens if he thought he needed to to stay in power.
Of course, one big difference was between Egypt and Libya is that Egypt’s military is (by Arab standards) professional and pretty competent, and even though they lost the Yom Kipur war, Egyptian troops in Sinai bloodied the Israelis enough that Egyptians felt they had sufficiently restored the nation’s honor that Anwar Sadat was able to sign to Camp David accords. (The previous three Arab-Israeli wars had resulted in Israel delivering a complete ass-kicking to all the Arab armies, so only receiving a partial ass-kicking was indeed a vast improvement.)
By contrast, Libya’s army seems pretty incompetent: they got their asses kicked by Chad in the Toyota War, in which Chadian forces armed with Toyota-pickup-mounted anti-tank guns left a billion dollars worth of Soviet equipment burning in the Aouzou Strip. It would not surprise me at all to find that the Libyan army is too poorly trained to suppress a real popular uprising.
Whether they want to or not, it looks like people all across the Middle East are fated to live in interesting times…
This Week in Jihad for January 27, 2011
Thursday, January 27th, 2011The big Jihad news this week, of course, was the Moscow bombing. But that was hardly the only thing of note:
Dokka Umerov has repeatedly made it very clear that he wants nothing to do with al Qaeda, or bin Laden.
The latter point reveals the following about the global War on Terror. First, the US and British efforts in Afghanistan and Iraq have succeeded in destroying al Qaeda’s reputation amongst Islamist organizations. If an Islamist cause as major as the Caucasus Emirate wants to stay clean of al Qaeda, it means that al Qaeda equals trouble. Al Qaeda involvement means interference from the world’s great powers.
Second, Russia’s situation reveals that the US and British efforts have failed to do significant damage to the ideology of Islamism. If a nationalist movement turns itself into a movement with Islamist objectives in order to make itself stronger, then it proves that the ideals to which al Qaeda subscribes have not been significantly damaged.

Wednesday, December 29th, 2010This post by Ann Althouse (and the ensuing comments) got me thinking about just what is the worst liberal song of all time? Being a man of action, I went ahead and created a poll:
A few notes on my criteria:
- It had to be a popular song people would actually recognize (which meant everything by Rage Against the Machine was right out)
- It had to suck (so things like the Sex Pistols’ “God Save the Queen” and many Dead Kennedys songs were exempt because they kicked ass)
- Only one song per artist (I mean, I really could have used just about everything off Pink Floyd’s The Final Cut otherwise)
- It had to have a certain self-righteous pretentiousness about it, so anything that was actually funny was exempt.
So go ahead and vote for your favorite musical slice of Suckitude.

- Not only does the production of biofuels produce more greenhouse gases than the fossil fuels they replace, but to feed Europe’s demand for them, farmers in African are being kicked off their own farms, helping create a food crisis.

This Week in Jihad for December 9, 2010

- The “fierce moral urgency” of closing Guantanamo Bay seems to have abated recently. (I can’t possibly imagine why.) But it’s a good thing considering that some 150 people release from Gitmo have returned to Jihad.
- Orthodox church destroyed in 9/11 tired of wondering when they’re going to get the greenlight to rebuild and files suit against NYC.
- Old and Busted: Hamas wanting to kill all the Jews. The New Hotness: Hamas wanting to kill all the Jews. And all the Christians. And all the…Communists? But then who will support our nation’s vital Che T-shirt industry?
Not these Che shirts. If you can't put up funny pictures of your friends on the pretext that its vaguely related to the topic at hand, what's the point of having a blog?
- And Hamas’ masters in Tehran aren’t too wild about Bahai, either. (That’s a Michael Totten piece, and as usual, it’s long, thoughtful, and full of interesting tidbits.)
- “Appreciating and respecting the Quran should not be done by eating its verses.” Especially in cake form.
- Convicted felon caught buying body armor. I’m sure it’s just a coincidence his name is Waheed Islam.
- When U.S. troops liberated Baghdad in 2003, I’m pretty sure it wasn’t so the next government could impose Sharia-inspired prohibition there.

The Bots Are Getting Smarter. (And Leon is Getting LARGER!)
Sunday, November 21st, 2010(Sigh) I may have mentioned that I have to clear out a fair amount of comments spam that Akismet catches every day.
Well, whoever programs bot seemed to have figured out at least that this is a political blog, as I’ve been getting a lot of generic anti-Charlie Rangel comments on threads that have nothing to do with Charlie Rangel. Close, but no cigar bot guys. (Or, to put it in your own bot language, “Your cigar with excellent closeness you fail to reach.”)
But I can see a day when bot spam may start to mimic at least a semi-competent troll. As usual, there’s an XKCD for that:
