I’m Really Satisfied With My Maytag MVWP575GW Washer

Here’s a bit of appliance review that, alas, I probably can’t profit from in any way, since Amazon doesn’t seem to sell the model.

My old Whirpool washer died in December, so I did some research as to what washer I should be. And most of my research was watching this video:

And the two brands he recommended were:

  • The Speed Queen TC5000, for which I was quoted delivery times of 6-8 weeks, and
  • The Maytag MVWP575GW, which I could order directly from Maytag in about a week for around a grand, plus shipping and install. So that’s what I did.
  • That’s more than you’re going to pay for an average washer these days. I’ve been using it for six months now, and I’m pretty satisfied.

What’s so special about it? It uses commercial grade mechanical parts instead of cheap plastic parts and fragile electronics.

It’s a dumb washer rather than a smart one. This has many benefits:

  • Once you press Start, instead of spending 20 or 30 seconds with the “Sensing” LED lit up, it simply starts filing the tub with water.
  • If you forget to add something you meant to wash, you press the same Start button, lift the lid, put it back down, and press it again, and the washer simply starts washing where it left off. It doesn’t blink lights at you accusingly and refuse to run until you unplug and replug the machine.
  • So far it’s never stopped mid-cycle for no discernible reason.
  • It finishes washing quicker, even with a presoak and extra spin.
  • America’s misguided energy- and water-saving regulations have left us with an array of devices that inferior to earlier generations of dumb devices at the main job they were designed for.

Speed Queen was the way we went. No regrets; the only caveat being that you should avoid the modernized hi-tech versions. They had to bring back the simpler ones with the mechanical guts due to consumer demand… The electronic ones weren’t popular.

Interesting. I’ve also heard that buying a Speed Queen or other commercial washer is the way to go. Any info on dryers?

    3. jeff says:

Maytag website lists the MVWP575GW as “Out of Stock” with a “Closeout” price $0.10 high than the normal price. Hope they will have some kind of comparable model by the time I need a new washer. With even fewer wash options. I just want one button “start wash”.

I’ve been watching videos by that guy you posted above. He’s really good at it. Happily I don’t need an appliance right now, but I’ve learned a bunch watching his videos, so hopefully I’ll be prepared when one of mine goes tango uniform.

Bummer. Wish you’d have bought this seven months sooner so I could have piggybacked on it. I got a new one of those ‘smart’ washers and while it’s good so far, this article now has me guessing where the over / under is on it crapping out, and I’ll have to bet under.

I have a Speed Queen washer and dryer both are the same as they make for laundromats just without the coin slots. They are actually made to be repaired as well so even if they do break they are far easier to get working again.

When I moved into my new house about 10 years ago, I bought all Kenmore appliances from Sears ( because I’m old school).
Nothing fancy or expensive and so far, no problems.

    8. Kirk says:

Household appliances are one of those things where if they’re built well, they’re really not all that profitable to make. The appliance companies get by making everything so damn complicated that it becomes unreliable as hell.

Speed Queen has some of those, but they also still sell the industrial-grade stuff that lasts a lot longer and is easier to work on. Buy anything else at your peril… I’m not a fan of the high-tech BS that seemingly tries to do everything for you but fold the laundry.

Maytags replacement commercial-not-smart model for the discontinued one appears to be the MVWP585GW, though some reviews on the Maytag site are complaining about nylon gears and such causing durability issues, plus a short warranty period. It is not clear to me if the geartrain is the same as the older 575 model. I should go watch that video and see if he says anything about the transmission fiddly bits.

    10. Anonymous Coward says:

Yup, the nylon gears are crap. We bought one in July of 2021. It was great until about 18 months in. Then it failed 4 times and we now have a Speed Queen.

    11. Kirk says:

A lot of the issues with washing machines come in from not having selected an appropriate machine for what you’re washing…

If all you ever wash is fine lingerie, then a machine with nylon gearing will last you a lot longer, and you might not need heavy-duty components like you find in the Speed Queens. If you wash a lot of horse blankets and other such things, wellllll… Those nylon gears aren’t going to last too damn long.

A lot of people really underestimate the forces going on in washing machines, and discount the need for really heavy-duty machinery in there. Trust me on this one… If you go out to look at farmhouses and stables? You’re not too likely to find any of the foo-foo electronic wonder-machines; everyone is running some flavor of Speed Queen or an analog of one.

Also, mechanics and anyone doing manual labor. You’ll rip the guts out of those effete machines doing their laundry…
