    To recap: Gun-control activists declared Virginia their proving ground and poured unbelievable amounts of money into a state-senate election; then they lost that election; then they bet big on executive actions instituting new gun control; they watched as those actions were not only reversed but gun rights were expanded.

    If we take Virginia as the bellwether that the gun-control activists envisioned, then gun control is dead as a 2016 issue.

  • And according to this legal paper by Instapundit Glenn Reynolds, lower courts are scrutinizing even modest post-Heller gun rights restrictions.
  • West Virginia is on the brink of becoming a right-to-work state.

    Sanders Up 60% to 33% Over Clinton in NH

    Bernie Sanders was already up over Hillary Clinton in New Hampshire, but not by this much:

    Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders has opened up his widest lead yet over rival Hillary Clinton in the crucial state of New Hampshire, according to a new poll released Tuesday.

    The new WMUR/CNN poll out this afternoon shows the Vermont lawmaker with a whopping 27-point lead over the former Secretary of State — 60-33 percent. That’s a climb of 10 percentage points for Sanders since mid-December and a drop of 7 points for Clinton. It marks Sanders’ highest support and widest lead in any poll in any state so far.

    The usual poll caveats and the fact that Sanders hails from neighboring Vermont applies. But that sort of result would have looked positively loony six months ago. Now? It’s just another data point in Hillary’s catastrophic collapse.

    Hillary can surviving losing to Sanders in New Hampshire, but I’m not sure she can survive getting walloped by that much…

    ObamaCare: Still an Electoral Loser

    I know it’s more of a “dog bites man” story by now, but given Obama’s ever-louder declarations that “debate is over,” here’s the most recent reminder that ObamaCare still has all the popularity of an album of Yoko Ono/Gilbert Godfried duets:

  • One indication of how unpopular ObamCare remains is how little Democrats want to talk about it. “If the law was really working, and voters were excited about it, Democratic candidates would be talking about it all the time, rather than trying to change the subject.”
  • Did you get health insurance through ObamaCare in Concord, New Hampshire? Sucks to be you. “Only a single insurer in the state offers policies through the new law. Ten of the state’s 26 hospitals and one fifth of its primary care providers aren’t in its network. Residents of Concord, the state capital, have to drive to other cities to get covered hospital care.”
  • Should Democrats run on ObamaCare in November? In a deeply shocking and unexpected development, Democratic consultants say yes, while Republican consultants say no.
  • Signed up for ObamaCare? Thanks to Heartbleed, you might want to change your password.
  • North Carolina Democratic Senator Kay Hagen dishonestly accuses her Republican opponent of supporting ObamaCare. Even liberal Politifact rates it mostly false.
  • Temporary workers are at an all-time high. Guess which piece of legislation NBC declined to mention when reporting on the story?
  • Wisconsin Rep. Ron Johnson and 38 other Republican congressmen fle suit against the Obama Administration over congressional ObamaCare subsidies.

    If You Don’t Think Ted Cruz is Running for President in 2016, You Haven’t Seen His Schedule

    Some political observers think Ted Cruz will pass on running in the 2016 Presidential race, including the very perceptive liberal law professor Alan Dershowitz, who says flatly that “Cruz won’t run in 2016.”

    I would suggest to those who don’t think Cruz is running should look at his travel schedule. This Saturday, for example, Cruz has a pretty hectic itinerary in New Hampshire:

    If I had to bet money, I’d say Cruz is running for the Presidency in 2016, and I think he’ll make a formidable candidate.

    Post-Election Roundup for 11/4/10

    A few bits:

    • Jim Gegharty speaks to Obi Wan: “The people tried trusting Democratic claims that they would govern as moderates. That didn’t work out, and that trust won’t be back any time soon”
    • Republicans increased their share of trifectas (i.e., where they control both state congressional chambers and the Governorship) from 8 to 20, while the Democratic Party’s trifectas declined from 16 to 9. That means Republican’s big win will become even bigger next year for redistricting.
    • The GOP also picked up state legislative chambers in New Hampshire, Maine, Wisconsin and Minnesota.
    • Battle10 on the Republican takeover of Wisconsin.
    • The quantity of Republican senators elected yesterday was lacking, but the quality of the ones getting in is impressive, especially considering who they replaced.
    • I’m not a big Ann Coulter fan, but this debunking of pre-election myths has some nice bits of snark: “Republican landslides are apparently inevitable whenever Democrats try to turn our health care over to the Department of Motor Vehicles.” “Even Lindsey Graham is going to start voting with the Republicans!”
    • Another Daily Kos writer employees the calm, dispassionate reason for which that site is known far and wide: “Screw you, whitey!”
    • Today’s winner of the Least Psychic Pundit Award: Stuart Rothenberg: “There are no signs of a dramatic rebound for the party, and the chance of Republicans winning control of either chamber in the 2010 midterm elections is zero. Not ‘close to zero.’ Not ‘slight’ or ‘small.’ Zero.”
