A Gun For Dinosaur Vs. T-Rex

Saturday, July 5th, 2025

If you’re well-read in science fiction, there’s a good chance you’ve read L. Sprague de Camp’s “A Gun for Dinosaur.” Now Scott from Kentucky Ballistics tests just how big a gun you need to take out a ballistic gel replica of a T-Rex skull.

Guns used:

  • .45 ACP (dual barrel)
  • 10 mm
  • .44 Magnum
  • .50 Magnum
  • 12 gauge shotgun
  • .45-70
  • .223
  • .460 Rigby
  • .577 Tyrannosaur (naturally)
  • .700 BMG
  • 4 bore (1″)
  • .950 JDJ
  • There are evidently only 20 .577 Tyrannosaur rifles, and only four .950 JDJs, in the world. One of the latter sold for just under $1 million last year, so if resurrected cloned dinosaurs do make a comeback, hunting them will probably be a very expensive hobby…

Kentucky Ballistics Tangles With .50 BMG Again

    Saturday, May 4th, 2024

I assume that everyone reading this remembers when Scott of Kentucky Ballistics almost died when a spicy .50 BMG round blew up his gun. Evidently Scott can’t resist the siren song of the .50 BMG, and here’s two more videos where he rides the lightning.

First: I suppose it was inevitable that someone would build this, and that someone turned out to be Noreen: A .50 BMG pistol. And yes, he straps on the body armor before shooting it.

  • It’s still technically a rifle because of the 16 1/2″ barrel.
  • Bolt action.
  • The usual shooting of food (tubs of mayonnaise and corn syrup, eggplant, and, for some reason, canned snails) ensues.
  • The muzzle blast is “like getting punched in the face by a really weak person constantly.”
  • No, he doesn’t attempt to shoot it one-handed.
  • Next up: He examines the danger of “scope kiss” when firing guns, starting small and working all the way up to a Smith & Wesson 500 Magnum and a Serbu BFG-50.

Yeah, you don’t want to have your face too close to the scope when you fire…

Video Roundup Of Ridiculously Large Guns

    Saturday, March 23rd, 2024

It’s been a while since we did a “just for fun” video roundup of ridiculously large caliber guns. So here it is!

First up: Scott of Kentucky Ballastics shoots the TII .500 Bushwacker. Given Scott’s previous critical failure with other .50 ammo, you can bet that he’s put on a lot of personal protective gear for this shoot.

  • “Let’s ride the lightening!”
  • A much bigger blast than the S&W .500 Magnum.
  • 2410 fps.
  • It makes it all the way through one ballistic gel block and into a second.
  • Both the S&W .500 Magnum and the .500 Bushwacker absolutely obliterate 6 pound cans of food, and eventually the collateral damage destroys the folding table.
  • If that wasn’t big enough, he also fires a punt gun against a gun safe. The safe doesn’t fare well.

Finally, to end with the most ridiculous, here’s someone firing a singles-shot 20mm Vulcan:

Good luck fitting that in your gun safe…
